History of Neon

The word neon comes from the Greek term “neos” meaning “the new gas”. French inventor Georges Claude applied electrical discharge to a sealed tube of neon gas and created a light. The first neon light sign in the United States was used by a Packard car dealership in LA. Outdoor signage advertising became a hit. It then became the most effective medium for signs around the world ever since.

The neon clock became one of the more popular applications of neon light. Smaller versions were used to decorate the interior of homes and buildings. It became a popular addition to the game room. Outdoors, giant illuminated electric clocks were installed in tall buildings. Because of its high visibility it was common practice to include neon clocks together with the name of the company in the building front. Structures with this light signage became landmarks in certain locations.
