Old houses usually have ornate timepieces made in flamboyant styles. Wooden clockswood clocks were very popular in olden times and continue to do so at present. These are made of wood and have large clock faces and hands that can easily be read from a distance. Some of the most popular wood clocks are mantel clocks.

Most of these mantel clocks are small and portable timepieces. These are commonly placed above the fireplace mantle. They are easily distinguished by the absence of carrying handles. These days, people still buy mantle clocks for classically themed rooms.
