This was because the design of the clock was such that there were weights and pendulums. It needed a long case to house all that. An English clockmaker, William Clement is credited as the creator of the long case clock.

The name grandfather clock came from a song written to commemorate a long case clock owned by two brothers who could not get it repaired. These days, we never ask anymore why this elegant clock is called grandfather’s clock. We just admire the mechanical sophistication and the finish of the casing.
