When Belle, the beauty wondered into the Beast’s castle she met an animated clock, a cup and a teapot. The mantel clock was named “Cogsworth” and he played a very charming role in the story. Everyone knew the Cogsworth didn’t look like a modern clock. He certainly did not look a clock in any kid’s bedroom. He was nevertheless just as endearing to children.

Cogsworth after all lived in a castle so it follows that his shape would be one that you would always see on top of fireplaces. Mantel clocks are usually made of hard wood or porcelain. They are placed in a prominent place in the house. It is usually in a room where everyone gathers. These clocks are also often found in formal sitting rooms, cigar rooms and old fashioned offices.
